Our Story

Why we started AF Travel Studio

AF Travel Studio was founded on a simple belief: that family travel is one of the most important investments a family can make — and it deserves to be designed properly.

Too many families spend months planning trips from generic guides, only to arrive feeling like they're doing what everyone else does. We wanted to change that. To build a service that treats every family as genuinely unique, and every trip as something worth designing from scratch.

"The best trips don't happen by accident. They happen because someone thought carefully about your family, and built something just for you."

We work with a small number of families at a time — deliberately. Because doing this well takes time, care, and genuine knowledge of the destinations we recommend. We'd rather design fewer trips exceptionally than many trips adequately.

Every family we work with gets our full attention. Every itinerary gets built from scratch. Every recommendation comes from somewhere we've been, researched deeply, and would put our own family in.

Step One
The Discovery Call
We start with a 20-minute conversation — not a form. We want to understand how your family actually travels: what you've loved before, what's felt wrong, the pace that suits you, and what you're hoping this trip becomes. The more honest and instinctive you are, the better what we build will be.

Step Two
Your Family Brief
After our call, we send you a short questionnaire — about 10 minutes. It covers your family's ages and interests, non-negotiables, things to avoid, past trips that worked and ones that didn't. This becomes the foundation everything else is built on. We read it more carefully than you'd expect.

Step Three
Deep Research
This is where we spend the most time. Every hotel vetted for family-specific practicalities. Every restaurant checked — noise level, kids' menu, booking flexibility. Every activity sequenced to your children's ages. We don't recommend anything we wouldn't put our own family in. This phase takes several days. That's intentional.

Step Four
Trip Proposal
Before we build the full itinerary, we share the concept direction — the shape of the trip, the key decisions and why we made them. This is your chance to give feedback, shift anything, and make sure we're headed exactly where you want to go. We'd rather adjust here than after 40 pages of itinerary.

Step Five
Itinerary Design
The centrepiece of what we do. A day-by-day document that covers everything — not as a list, but as a narrative. Each day begins with a note on pace and intention. Every restaurant comes with the reason we chose it and what to order. Every activity includes what to ask for, what your kids will love, and what time to arrive. It's the kind of document you'll read cover to cover before you even pack.

Travel — and Beyond
We're available throughout your trip for anything that comes up — a question, a change of plan, a "what do we do tonight?" moment. When you get home, we genuinely want to hear how it went. And if there's a next trip taking shape in the back of your mind, you already know where to find us.

How much does it cost?

Our design fee varies depending on the complexity and length of the trip. We'll always discuss this transparently on the discovery call before any commitment. We believe strongly that bespoke travel design should be accessible — we're not the most expensive option, but we're not the cheapest either. What families consistently tell us is that it's worth it.
Do you book everything for us, or just plan it?

We design the trip and provide booking guidance — direct links, timing advice, and exactly what to ask for. For most families, making the bookings themselves is straightforward with our guidance. For families who'd prefer full concierge booking support, we can discuss that as an add-on. Either way, nothing falls through the cracks.
How far in advance do I need to contact you?

For most trips, 8–12 weeks before departure is ideal — it gives us enough time to do the research properly and ensures key bookings are available. For peak season travel (summer, school holidays, Japan in spring), earlier is better. That said, if you have a shorter timeline, reach out anyway — we'll always tell you honestly whether we can do the trip justice.
My kids are very different ages. Can you design a trip for that?

Yes — this is actually one of the things we do best. Designing for mixed ages requires real thought about pacing, activity selection, and the balance between what excites a 6-year-old and what engages a 14-year-old. It's completely achievable, and honestly one of the most rewarding briefs we receive.
What if I want to change something after I receive the itinerary?

We include a round of revisions as standard. If something doesn't feel right — a pace, a venue, a day — just tell us. We'd rather get it exactly right than have you set off with something that's 90% perfect. We're not done until you're completely happy.
Do you only work with certain destinations?

We have deep expertise in a core set of destinations — Japan, Italy, Morocco, Thailand, East Africa, Portugal, and a handful of others. For destinations outside our core expertise, we'll tell you honestly. We only design trips to places we know well enough to stand behind every recommendation we make.
